Wood Ring (2010) by Chris Kabel

Part of the Shared Space III Installation for Witte de With, center for Contemporary Art and TENT Rotterdam.

Materials: Oregon pine, stainless metal band
Dimensions: Ø 280 / 40 cm

A 10 meter long massive wood beam is cut up in a hundred tapered pieces that, when put together, make a circular bench. A metal band clamps the pieces together without glue. Because the bench is made out of one solid beam the wood grain continues along the bench.

CHORES
What’s more frightening than an unconvincing animatronic gigantic great white shark? A giant pile or ironing, that’s what. Well, maybe. Just a silly idea I had.

Sketches / Red Magazine
Bunch of sketches from yesterday evening. Splayed out on the floor, I literally thumbed through Red and drew whatever took my fancy. Even Daniel Craig and the dog were from the magazine; although I dressed the dog up in that jacket myself. Giving me a fun idea for Christmas cards, although I fear it’s too late to even consider that now!

We now know that Corey Holms is a very good designer and a very nice man. But is Tom Muller a very good designer and, for all intents and purposes, a very nice man? The answer is yes!

So you’ve got helloMuller, Kleber, Mr and Mrs M, you work with/for (?) Studio Output

SHOP might be the coolest magazine that until recently i had never heard of. Published in 90 editions across 28 countries, it’s a high end guide to the best shopping destinations in the world.
But why it’s cool is that they get the BEST illustrators for their covers (and obviously this post lets you know they were kind enough to ask me to join those ranks). They are even good enough to put a collection of all of them online here. I suggest that you have a quick look at mine above (abridged version: alpine, skier, dynamic, etc) and then get busy looking at all this art by Jack Hughes, Paul Blow, Pietari Posti and the rest (i just realised as i was scrolling through they even have some Jason Brooks, who was a huge influence on me when i was starting out - i do love some Jason Brooks).

Extremely honoured to be included in such a fantastic and beautifully presented book.. especially delighted as it consists of members from collectives that I’m apart of, in one little package.. people that I’m so very fond of and admire as my contemporaries…
